AKRON WATER SPORTS SHOW OPENS THIS FRIDAY
The 3rd annual Progressive Akron Boat & Water Sports Show will cruise into the John S. Knight Center for 3 days beginning Friday at 12 noon through Sunday.
Whether you’re interested in the latest fishing boats, family runabouts, tow boats or pontoons, the dozens of boats being displayed in the show by northeast Ohio dealers will feature the latest technology that’s proving to be hot buttons for today’s boaters. For example, tow boats specially designed for water skiing, tubing, wake boarding and, the latest craze, wake surfing.
New models of pontoon boats, particularly popular on northeast Ohio’s lakes and currently leading the boating industry in sales nationally, will be on display. From $15,000 basic models to ultra-luxurious ones with a price tag substantially north of $50,000 for amenities like granite bars and couch-like seating will all be featured.
That’s not to say the Akron show will only feature tow boats and pontoons. There will be plenty of boats designed for kick-back family comfort, from sleek runabouts to the latest bow riders. And, for fishermen, this year’s show will be bigger than ever with boats and angling activities.
New this year is the addition of fishing tips and seminars from atop the Bass Tub, a giant 5000-gallon aquarium that lets visitors witness how fish react to lures and baits. In addition, there will be continuous daily angling presentations on the new Fisherman’s Central Fishing Stage.
Personal watercraft, paddleboards and kayaks will also take center stage. Like pontoons, kayaks are not old style anymore. There’s even a growing crowd of fishermen taking to the newest kayaks designed and equipped especially for angling. And, there will be daily kayak fishing seminars presented in the Sun Valley exhibit.
There will also be displays of accessories and water sports equipment including the latest in wakeboards, tubes and towables, wake surfing boards, and more. Each day has a special theme.
Opening Friday night is Date Night and the atmosphere will remind attendees of “Oh those summer nights which aren’t that far off now.” There will be special foods, beverages and entertainment to set the mood.
Saturday will be the Mid-Winter Rendezvous, with a special focus and celebration of boating on the Portage Lakes with all the area has to offer. Again, special foods, beverages and entertainment will round out the day.
Finally, Sunday will be KIDSday. It will feature special Kid’s Only Fishing Clinics complete with a cane pole set for the first 100 youngsters. In addition, kids will find costumed characters, face painters and balloon artists strolling the aisles for pictures and fun.
“The timing of this show is ideal,” says show manager Michelle Burke. “Boat buyers can see the latest models in on place at one time with the boating season now just around the corner. Even more important, dealers will offer special manufacturer incentives and discounts on boats and equipment. And, if a model has to be ordered it’s critical to get the order in now to insure delivery by the time the boating season get underway,” Burke adds.
Show hours will be: Opening Friday (3/1) 12 Noon to 9:00 pm; Saturday (3/2) 10:00 am to 9:00 pm; Sunday (3/3) 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. Admission: $8.00 Adults; Children 12 & under Free. There is also free parking after 6pm Friday evening and all day Saturday and Sunday at several adjacent City Garages.
